My Mission Review at the End of my Two

Hello Everyone!

 

This is the last email I will ever send as a missionary!  Thank You for all that you have done for me in my life, in one form or another.  You have helped in some small and some big ways become the person I am today.  So, Thank You!!!  This email is long, and more for myself and others who want to remember these past two years, but please enjoy.  

These two years I have served my mission have really been the best two years of my life!  I never been so sad to leave, change, move, etc. anything in my life.  I never been so happy for something I have done.  Words cannot describe my mixed feelings and emotions right now.  I have seen countless miracles performed by the hand of the Lord, and I can see one of the biggest miracles that occurred was the change that took place in me!  I owe it all to my Father in Heaven and my Savior, Jesus Christ, who through His Atonement made change possible.  I have seen miracles in others' lives, change in others' lives, joy in others' lives, growth in others' lives.  Because of all these things, I have had great joy!  I have found the most joy as I have selflessly cared for others, over myself.  I can honestly say I Love People!  I love so many people, and I am so happy when others are happy.  I can kind of get a glimpse of how our Heavenly Father feels when we are happy!  I can testify of the promise found in D&C 18:15-16...that when I have brought souls unto Christ, I have had such great joy!!!  

I have learned so much on my mission; from different studies, people, areas, cultures, attitudes.  I truly have learned so much!  Each area taught me something different, and represents something different to me.

To give you a recap of my areas and Mission: 

AREA: Beckley, WV 

Duration: 4 transfers; Sep. 2014 - Feb. 2015

BECKLEY

 

Beckley is where I learned what being a Missionary is like.  Here in Beckley, I grew to love West Virginia and it's culture.  I grew to love so many people.  I grew to love the scriptures.  I grew in my testimony and in knowledge.  I learned perseverance and about enduring to the end, especially in dark, cold hours of the day, in less-than-desirable wet, cold conditions, up dirt roads to who knows where.  Here there were countless car incidents and countless good people to teach with countless miracles.  Most of all, I grew in my testimony of obedience; Obedience brings blessings. Strict obedience brings Miracles!  Beckley and that basement submarine apartment  )=  will always be in my heart. 

 

AREA: Floyd, VA

Duration: 2 transfers; Feb 2015 - May 2015

Companions: Elder Austin Olsen (1), Elder Josh Boyd (1)

FLOYD

 

Floyd is still by far the most unique place I have ever been, and ever served in.  In this County, there was one stoplight and there were more cows then people.  There were three types of people found in Floyd County: Farmers, Businessmen employed in Roanoke/Blacksburg, and Hippies!  Everyone was all about the organic, natural stuff!  In this small County, I met some of the most stalwart members with burning testimonies of the Gospel, and one of the greatest branches - only growing!  I honestly kept asking the Members, "Where did you come from!?!" [They were that great!]  Here, the members think it's the 11th Commandment to feed the missionaries, and I learned after eating Southern food every day, and not watching your portions, you can really put on weight!  I saw the growth of Spring here, and the feeling of being renewed!  Here, I faced the trial of not seeing great nor insurmountable success.  But I stayed committed.  Here, I truly began to learn about the Atonement of Jesus Christ, and how it works differently for everyone, because Jesus Christ is our personal Savior.  I truly learned that my Father in Heaven hears and answers prayers.  I truly learned about humility here. 

 

AREA: Charleston, WV

Duration: 2 transfers; May 2015 - Aug 2015

CHARLESTON

 

Charleston in the Summer!  I couldn't ask for a better place to be!  High temperatures and high humidity from being right next to the Kanawha River.  In Charleston, you got a mix of just about everything; city life, county life, wealthy neighborhoods, the ghetto, poor abandoned coal towns, hillside homes, and Hollers.  This was huge area!  I saw the power of when members come together, and what gets accomplished.  I truly learned here how to be diligent, and saw the blessings of diligence.  I almost never had a time to catch my breath.  I learned a little bit about being a leader, while going on countless exchanges, and teaching at zone meeting.  I saw great things come as we taught simply, but powerfully.  I saw many individuals enter the waters of Baptism, and receive a remission of their sins.  I learned a lot about the Gospel of Jesus Christ here in Charleston, especially the first principle: Faith.
 

AREA: Buena Vista, VA

Duration: 3 transfers; Aug 2015 - Dec 2015

Companion: Elder Braxton Johnson (3)

BUENA VISTA

 

BV!  A.K.A. Mormonville.  With 20% of the town being Mormon, it was like being back home in Utah with 300 strong at Sacrament each week, and plenty of kids.  Again, let me echo, it was like being back home in Utah.  BV is home to Southern Virginia University (you might as well call it "BYU-East," with 91% of the student body being Mormon.)  It was definitely a change from big city/big area Charleston.  Everything was within walking distance, and I got to claim being in the smallest Area east of the Mississippi River (maybe) - it was just 2 1/2 miles long!  Here, I realized the importance of Members and the role we all have to share the Gospel with our friends and neighbors.  Disappointment was daily, diligence to avoid boredom was necessary.  I learned a lot about charity here, and love a ton of people to pieces.  I also learned how to put my creative skills to use in Missionary Work; booths, parades, photo ops, Firesides, parties, etc... anything different than knocking on doors, we did it!  I also saw great miracles in the Area and in the zone I was called to help lead.  There were so many good missionaries who I got to work with, each one having a great eye of Faith!  I really enjoyed it here, and learned a lot on hope! 

 

AREA: Roanoke, VA
Duration: 3 transfers; Dec 2015 - Apr 2016

Companions: Elder John Maxfield (2), Elder Scott Jolley (1)

ROANOKE

 

The biggest city in the Mission, and I was called to be a Walk/Bike Elder here!  Right on!  Opening up the new area was a challenge, and I loved the Challenge!  I did not, however, love the biking in below freezing temperatures, with that humidity cutting right through any amount of clothing I'd throw on and piercing me to the bone.  Above all, I really learned a lot about gratitude.  I became so grateful for what I have; a testimony of the Gospel, my temporal needs, a family, a great life, education, and especially appreciating the little things.  Many people here did not have a lot - most of the people were living off not much at all.  Here, I learned how to survive the rough neighborhoods, and how to be street smart!  I saw the blessings of diligence, hard work, and patience.  I saw a love for the Gospel grow, and a love in helping others come closer to God.  The Area grew and flourished, and even though I didn't see any Baptisms while I was there, the missionaries after continued to work hard, and teach and Baptize those I found!  The Work of Salvation always requires many laborers. 

 

AREA: Botetourt County, VA

Durations: 3 transfers; Apr 2016 - Aug 2016

Companion: Elder Cade Shirley (3)

BOTECOURT COUNTY

 

Botetourt.  I bet half of y'all can barely pronounce it! (Bot-a-tot)  I have to admit, when I was first assigned to this Area, I was not excited.  With bad rumors I had heard in the past, and the little success or activity [because it hadn't been worked] that had occurred here before, I was a little skeptical.  It only took me a couple days to realize how awesome Botetourt is!!!  You can control two things on your Mission: Attitude & Effort!  With great attitude and effort, we saw so many great things and Miracles!  Here, even more than before, I saw promised blessings come true.  I saw this Area grow, and the excitement for growth as well!  The Botetourt Branch was formed, and everyone knew they had to pull together and dig in deep!  I will always proudly hold the title of one of "the first missionaries to serve in the Botetourt Branch!"  Here, I really loved everything and everyone I could!  I love each of the Branch members so deeply, that I can't even describe it.  That love came from getting to know them, serve them, praying for them, and always teaching with them!  The members in Botetourt are wonderful, and I have no doubt the Branch will grow!  Botetourt County has so much potential!  Of course, I had to face the trials of finding people to teach; everyone here was quick to tell us they have their own church, or they didn't want to talk to us.  Through constant and regular rejection, we saw the blessings of truly loving everyone we taught and found.  I saw one of the greatest miracles ever, and saw a wonderful soul come unto Christ and enter in the waters of Baptism, the last week of my mission!  A perfect storybook ending to my Mission!

 

I want everyone to know how deeply I love my Mission!  I will always cherish the memories, the moments, and the madness!  By performing the Work of Salvation, and doing it the Lord's way, I have seen the Lord change so many people, including myself.  If you want to, you can become who your Heavenly Father wants you to be.  I have grown in so many aspects that I cannot count.  

I, above all, have grown in perspective of how perfect our Heavenly Father's plan is for us.  He is perfect, and loves us perfectly.  He answers our prayers.  He sent His perfect Son, Jesus Christ, to teach His perfect Gospel, and perform His perfect Atonement.  All this, so that all of us could perfectly return, with our families, to Heavenly Father's presence.  I know Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer.  I know He restored His Church through the Prophet Joseph Smith, and that the Church remains today!  It is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  This is possible because I know the Priesthood of God was restored so Christ's Church could be on the earth today, and be led by Him.  The Priesthood was restored so families can be together forever!  I know the Book of Mormon is true with all my heart!  I have read it and read it.  The Spirit has testified to me it is true!  I know the Holy Ghost is real, and by the power of the Holy Ghost we can know the truth of all things! (Moroni 10:3-5)  Jesus Christ leads His Church through his servants, and a Prophet of God, Thomas S. Monson, is a living prophet today.  I know he and the Apostles are witnesses of Christ.  I know I am called to help fulfill The Apostles' commission from Jesus Christ found in Matthew 28:19-20.  I know I have labored to do just that!  I know, for a fact, I've been called to the West Virginia Charleston Mission for many specific purposes and reasons!  I know I have been engaged in the Lord's work, and I have seen blessings through obedience and diligence.  I know, as I have followed the counsel of my Mission President, I have been led to do good, and be good.  I know President Salisbury is called of God to be my Mission President.  I know this is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, I know it can help us change, and not just change, but change to become a Disciple of Christ!  I know our Heavenly Father seeks to bless us.  Obedience to commandments brings blessings.  Heavenly Father's plan is perfect, and Jesus Christ's church and Gospel is perfect!  I do stand as a witness of these things and offer this testimony with power and conviction from my soul!  I KNOW!  And like my favorite Hymn states: "I'll never, no never, I'll never, no never, I'll never, no never, no never forsake!"

Frog Legs Taste Just Like Chicken...Mixed with Fish

Hey Everyone! 

Well, probably the biggest news is that it is transfer week, and surprisingly I'm getting transferred!  This is my second area in a row, that I've only stayed two transfers.  I am getting transferred to Buena Vista, Virginia: home of Southern Virginia University. 

I'll be serving in Buena Vista family ward. They have 6 Buena Vista YSA wards, and they have YSA Elders for that.  I have one of the smallest areas (geographically) in the mission.  There are two church buildings in my area and one is very close to my apartment.  I was told it could easily be a walking area, if we weren't called as zone leaders and didn't need to drive to meetings/exchanges.  And that's legit!

My new companion will be Elder Brendon Johnson (a different Elder Johnson than my trainer).  The funny thing is, me and Elder Numbers (a fellow VHS boy) are swapping places.  He was just in BV, and now he's coming to Charleston to be with Elder Jacklin!

So, as for the rest of the week...it was pretty busy! So, I'll get started!

Mon. Aug. 3:  P-Day.  We played indoor soccer at the church and I got a hair cut (I got a lot of compliments on it, too.)

We had an interesting conversation/lesson taught with a lady, then two younger women walked up, and the original lady we were talking to left, so it was a little awkward.  (Was this a “set up?”)

We taught a man named, Paul Johnson - he's a former investigator, but he's really kind.  We taught The Restoration, and he really liked it.  We're hoping to prepare him for a September 27th Baptismal date.  

Tues. Aug. 4:  I forgot to write in my journal!  (So, I can’t remember what happened this day!)

I'm pretty sure we taught Rodney with Brother Charles Hawes.

Wed. Aug. 5:  So, we went on exchanges with the Beckley Elders.  Elder Allsworth came with me to Charleston.  He's a former Navy SEAL, so he's very well disciplined and ready to work. 

Brother Blessant came with us to see Sister McCloyd, and we had a brief, but powerful lesson on the Book of Mormon.

We then went and saw Andrew.  We taught about the importance of obedience.  Brother Blessant shared the story of the Liahona, which was great. 

Then we met up at the church with Sister McGill for a Family History lesson for Robert Price - she was able to help him out a ton in the Family History library. 

Then the Vest couple picked us up for a lesson at the Ratliff's.  We had a great lesson on repentance and the Atonement.  Brother Ratliff will be baptized some day! 

We finished up the night by having a whiteboard lesson with Lissa on the Plan of Salvation (we drew it out, and it helped her understand better).

Thur. Aug. 6:  Well, today was full of zone leader business. :)

We were able to teach Kelsey with Brother Collet, and then he took us out to McD's after. 

All of our other appointments cancelled.  :(

Fri. Aug. 7:  District meeting was in the morning, and then we weekly planned. 

Trevor Patton picked us up, and we went and saw:

Sharon -  we were planning on teaching Family History, and she was not interested due to a rough family.  This was the first time I've ever taught a lesson the investigator really didn't want to hear.  So, we focused it on the temples instead. 

Deborah Humphries - a member who used to live in WV referred her to Bishop Johnson, and he passed it on to us.  We were finally able to meet with her today.  She is golden!  She loved The Restoration, and accepted a Baptismal date for September 27.  Her friend, Vivian, was also there - she was very interested in our message, and really admired what we did as Missionaries.  She's Catholic and was very repetitive on the fact that she'd already been baptized in the Catholic church, so she didn't accept a Baptismal date.  Hopefully, we can work with that concern.

Sat. Aug. 8:  I will describe this day in three words: Long, Hot, Non-amusing. 

We did make a stop at Dairy Winkle to brighten our day a little bit! 

No one was home! 

Had a lesson with Rodney on church and Baptism, and we had to get extra bold with him to follow through with his commitment to come to church.

Sun. Aug. 9:  Well, we were expecting six at church (Rodney, Brother Ratliff, Deborah & Vivian, Amit, and Isabelle Kirk) 

We only got Brother Ratliff there, but we were still happy with 1 for 6.

We had dinner at the Ingles'.  

We had an awesome experience today!  While we were walking home in Kanwaha City, we stopped and talked to a mother and her 10 yr. old daughter.  Her uncle was Mormon, and she was very interested in our message.  We gave them both pamphlets, so we taught them right there in the street!  The Mom's name was Johnnie, and the daughter's name was Madison.  They both enjoyed the pamphlet, and reading where we asked them to.  We got a return appointment for next Sunday.

Mon. Aug. 10:  They're opening up a bike area in Beckley (which the Assistants asked me to draw the boundaries for, with my knowledge of Beckley), so it was our job this morning to help load their furniture for their new apartment. 

Then we spent a good chunk of our day getting car repairs/estimates/reports.

We went to the Ratliff's for dinner and we had frog legs!

We had a great lesson on prayer, and I asked Sister Ratliff what does she pray for?  She responded with a great, honest answer: "I pray that Bill will be able to come to know this church is true, and be Baptized!"  It brought the Spirit so much, and we committed Brother Bill Ratliff to come to church this Sunday with a prayer of when he should be baptized.

Like I said, it's a matter of when will he be baptized, rather than IF.  He's awesome!

Tues. Aug. 11:  We dropped our car off at Firestone today for an oil change, and walked all day!

We talked to a lot of people and got some potentials.  We talked to this one guy who lives close by Camden, NJ, so hopefully he request missionaries up there to come see him. (Maybe it'll be my Couz, Ben!)

So, after walking back to the Firestone, they still didn't have it ready.  We dropped it off at 11 a.m. and came back at 5 p.m.  They couldn't do a oil change in 6 hours???

We had dinner at the Parmley's, then had a lesson with Lissa on faith and repentance.

We had 29 new missionaries (24 Elders, 5 Sisters) arrive from the MTC today!  It’s an even bigger group than last transfer, which was 25.  We had 12 Elders stay at our house.  Wheww! (just 10 last transfer).

Well, I love you all!  Prayer is great!  I gained a great testimony on how prayer can comfort you and relieve you this week!

I know this Gospel is true!

There's No Growth in the Comfort Zone, No Comfort in the Growth Zone

Hey Everyone!

How's everything going?  I'm doing good.  I’d say maybe I’m coming off the great week high to a tough week low.  But, there’s still so many good things to be thankful about.  For instance, Kelsey and Zach both made it to the temple this Friday!  It was great to see and hear about!

Kelsey also got up and bore her testimony in Sacrament meeting, and Lissa conquered her fears of praying in front of other people, and said the closing prayer in Gospel Principles class!

Mon. July 27:  Today marks 11 months as a missionary! 

Well, we went on a hike, and something got in my eye and it go swollen up so big!  It was gross. (unfortunately, no photos of the eye)

We helped Brother Belcher sand his wood floors, and then he took us out to dinner! 

We then took Brother Belcher to teach a lesson to his neighbor, Elaine.  We were teaching her on her porch, and then her boyfriend comes out and gives her phone - apparently, she needed to take care of something, so she had to go.  So......do you call that 1/2 of a lesson?

Tue. July 28:  We had Mission Leadership Conference today from 9:00-4:00.

We had dinner with the Cottrel's – we also had a great lesson on using, Preach My Gospel.

We also had a lesson with Andrew that Brother Charles Hawes came to with us.

Our other lesson was with Rodney - he's still smoke-free! 

Wed. July 29:  We had a lesson with Kelsey today - her first “recent convert” lesson!  She's going to the temple Friday! (That's why she was confirmed the same Sunday that she was baptized on.) 

Brother Stratfford took us to the Ratliff's where we had a great lesson on Joseph Smith, as a Prophet.  They were both dedicated to study JSH, and watch, “Joseph Smith: The Prophet of the Restoration” later in the week.

Thur. July 30:  We had zone meeting; there’s a lot for us to improve on - we'll step up our game next time! 

We went on exchanges with the Spencer Elders; I went with Elder Williams to Spencer.

There we taught four lessons!  One was to a women was named, “Billie Jean.”  (Go ahead and start playing Michael Jackson’s song!)

Fri. July 31:  I am so passionate about Baptismal interviews!  First thing in the morning, I got to interview one of Spencer Elder's investigators for Baptism.  His name is Markeem, and he's 18 yrs. old and a real sweet kid.  In two weeks, he's actually moving down to the Charleston 1st Ward for school at West Virginia State University.  But he's sweet, and he was baptized on Sunday. 

We had a lot of appointments cancelled today!  It was HOT.  We were spent.  And all of our appointments just cancelled.  During our dinner hour, I knew where I needed to be - I got down on my knees, and prayed we could see something happen today!  I prayed for strength, and just something to put a smile on my face.  Well, one event led to another....we tried an investigator, then tried a former investigator in the same area and while we were talking to him, he told us about the street he grew up on, so we went to that street he grew up on – I’d never been there before, AND....We found Melvin and Nia!  I knew God answered my/our prayers.  It was a great experience!  We taught them, out on their porch, The Restoration.  They were so interested, and they agreed to a September 20 Baptismal date, if they come to know it is true!  They are a great young couple in their 20's – they’re not married, but still great! 

Sat. Aug 1: We contacted two referrals, and got their information – I hope to teach them soon!

We drove down to the Kirk's, and had a lesson with Zach, Isabelle, and their grandpa.  Zach was so thrilled about his temple trip,
he was without words when he was describing it.  He said he’d never experienced so much peace. 

The goal is to get new converts interviewed and to the temple within 30 days of their Baptism.  

So, as far as our new converts:  Zach got there 33 days after, Kelsey 5 days, and Lissa (still working on getting her a temple date).

We had three appointments cancelled today!  :(

Brother Blessant came with us to see Rodney - he is now two weeks smoke-free!  But, he's having a hard time realizing the importance of coming to church.  He wants to come, but thinks if he can make some money instead, he should do that. 

Sun. Aug 2:  So, our congregation was down on Sacrament meeting attendance this week.  Only Amit came and even he had to leave mid-way through Sacrament meeting.  But, Kelsey bore an awesome testimony and a “Good-Bye” as this will be her last Sunday in our Charleston 1st Ward.  She leaves for Wheeling, WV (home) this weekend, then down to New Orleans (she’s going to graduate school at Tulane University) next weekend ! 

We were able to save some miles on our car today and walk!

We taught Logan and Austin, with Trevor, and they are finally reading the Book of Mormon. 

We also taught Kelsey, and she told us about her temple Trip.  We re-taught about Family History and temples, and committed her to go to the Baton Rouge temple within two weeks of her getting down there. 

Well, keep me in your prayers, and I'll keep you in mine! 

This Gospel is so very true!

There was a great theme in yesterday's Fast and Testimony meeting.  It was recurring that everything happens in God's time - and God's time is Eternity, and families can be together for Eternity!  So, this is why we do what we do, this is why things happen in God's time.

So Many Miracles!

Hey Everyone!

This was such a great week!
Here's a list of great events that happened this week!
1. Kelsey was baptized and confirmed this week! (along with "J," the Assistants’ investigator)
2. Lissa was confirmed during Sacrament meeting!
3. Zach Kirk received the Priesthood!
4. The Ratliff's came to church after a little bit of a drought.
5. Luke Bowlin had a 1st lesson with us Saturday at the church, plus a church tour afterwards with his wife, Jessie, and son, Logan.
6. Luke and Jessie came to church!  Had a lot of ward members welcome them!
7. Went on exchanges with my old companion, Elder Caldwell!  We taught 2 new investigators, Austin and Logan, ages 19 and 18.
8. Went on exchanges with Elder Cluff.  One word: Hilarious
9. Taught/picked up a former investigator named, Momadou.  We brought over Bro. Williams, they clicked well.
10. Went to the driving range this Monday for P-Day! 

So much fun!  I think I'd be an excellent golfer if I warmed up for about an hour before every tee time.

Mon. July 20:  We went to the driving range for P-Day.

Kelsey was interviewed for Baptism by Elder Thackeray, our District Leader.  She passed!  

Tue. July 21:  Brother Charles Hawes drove us all the way out to Cowen, WV - that helped big time with miles! 

We started our exchanges; Elder Caldwell came with me to Charleston!  Elder Jacklin stayed in Cowen with Elder Wilkey (Elder Caldwell is training Elder Wilkey).  We did have everything start falling through on us, but it was still great!  Elder Caldwell is the Assistants’ District Leader, so while he was in town, we planned it so he could interview Jordan for Baptism. 

We were able to go teach two potentials, Austin and Logan - it was a powerful lesson on the porch.  Both of them have had some pretty shady past/present, but they were both very accepting to The Restoration.  To quote Logan: “This is the realest...(insert missionary-appropriate euphemism)... I've heard on a porch!”

Brother Brown joined us to teach Kelsey the Plan of Salvation - actually we had her lead out on the conversation, and had her teach us. 

Wed. July 22:  We exchanged back.

We went down to Montgomery, and the Minnich's took us out to dinner.  We then chatted with Amit at his work. 

We went, with Brother Minnich, to see Sister Nichols, a less-active member.  Brother Minnich shared President Uchtdorf's, "All is Well" message from the Ensign.  She also asked for a Priesthood blessing, and asked me to give it.  The Priesthood is real! 

Thur. July 23:  We worked out in Elkview today, one of those outskirt areas.  Sister Fisher fed us while we were out there.

Brother Hinman was our guy for “High Priest Team-Up Thursday!”

We saw Brother Beck briefly, and talked about setting a temple date. 

We also saw Rodney - he's 5 days smoke-free!  We taught him of the nature of God. 

Then this was cool, Brother Hinman is well-learned at Family History, so we went to Robert Price, kind of our Family History investigator, and helped him out some more.

Fri. July 24:  Pioneer Day!  But not really out here in WV!  We did sing, “Come, Come Ye Saints” for District meeting this morning. 

We then exchanged with the Sissonville Elders.

Elder Cluff came with me to Charleston, and Elder Jacklin went with Elder Fitch & Elder Walker to Sissonville.

We taught the McCray's – we’re still trying to get them to come to church.  Elder Cluff and Brother McCray hit it off so well that Brother McCray wants to start going to the Charleston 2nd Ward in Sissonville.  Well...... at least he'd be coming back to church. 

Brother Belcher came with us to teach Kelsey.  We did a review of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Also, we finally got in with a former investigator named, Momadou.  He's pretty sweet, he’s got his knowledge of the Restoration. 

Sat. July 25:  We taught Luke Bowlin at the church.  We had a great Restoration lesson, and answered a lot of questions and quieted some concerns.  He's awesome, though!  He’d accepted Baptism, but wanted to investigate more.  Last Transfer, I mentioned in an email that we tracted into a young lady, and she said her husband was thinking about becoming a Mormon.  Well, stopping by later on exchanges, he told Elder Jacklin he'd contact us when he's ready.  Then not too long at all after that, we got a media referral and it was Luke!  He actually wanted to meet with us at the church; his wife dropped him off and we taught him at the church on Saturday, and then gave him and his wife a church tour after the lesson.  And the next morning they were both sitting next to us in church!  It was awesome to see, and the ward was so curious about who this new young family was, and multiple people greeted them and they were well fellowshipped immediately. 

Brother Foote came with us to see Warren...No Dice...but we did go see a less-active Sister named, Sister McCloyd.

Brother Collet came with us for the rest of the night.  He's a pretty funny character.  We saw the Kirk's and taught about Priesthood; Isabelle understood it better, and Zach is receiving it tomorrow!

Then we had one last lesson with Kelsey, as an investigator.  We watched the Restoration video and talked about how important the Book of Mormon is.  She's one in a million! 

Sun. July 26:  We had our usual meetings in the morning. 

We had a good turnout at church!

*Luke and his wife, Jessie, came!  A lot of people introduced themselves!
*Amit (he was actually able to stay for Gospel Principles class - his first time in the many years of investigating for him.)
*The Ratliff's came!  WooHoo!  They also stayed after for the Baptism!
*Kelsey showed up to her own Baptism day, thank goodness!
Lissa got confirmed today!  We got to be in the circle!  Awesome!  She had a big smile on her face, especially when both the speakers reference her in their talks today. 
Zach also got sustained during Sacrament Meeting, and then received the Priesthood during church! I asked him about it, and he's like, "I FEEL GOOD!"
The Baptismal program was very well done, and there were lots of people, so it was held in the chapel.

Elder Rueda baptized Jordan, and Elder Jacklin baptized Kelsey.  Then Elder Markowski confirmed Jordan, and I got to confirm Kelsey.  Never before have I felt so much energy and power as I confirmed her a member, and told her to, "Receive the Holy Ghost."  AMAZING!  I Cannot and WILL NOT deny how powerful and real that was!

This week, I started getting all these clothes. 

Kelsey got me and Elder Jacklin ties, customized with our initial on them.  Then, her friend Kathryn, who first referred her from up in Morgantown, spoke at the Baptism, and gave each of us another tie!

Then I got a pretty nice UTES shirt in the red-colored themed care package my mom sent me this month.

We were able to teach Brother Beck and his sons.  His sons, Josh (age 12) and Sam (age 10) aren't members, but only live with him during the Summer, so we'll see what’s the next step there.  Brother Nate Williams came with us see Mamodou (pronounced MAMMA-DO).  It was pretty cool.  They both connected and we taught the Plan of Salvation – it went really well!

Well, it was such a great week!  This is the most happiest I've been on my mission! 

I just want to bear my testimony on how real the Priesthood is, and how it truly is the power of God and the ability to call down angels.  It was restored through the Prophet Joseph Smith, along with the rest of Gospel!  The Priesthood ONLY blesses other’s lives. What a great privilege we have to have it on this earth!  This is TRUE!  Let us do all we can to respect and honor the Priesthood.

The Case of the Cookie Caper

Well, Hey Ya'll! 

This was another great week!  Elder Jacklin and I saw some great things this week! 

We were both able to participate in the circle for Zach's Confirmation, which was a wonderful experience!  It was a first for me, and it was so great to feel the power of someone receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost.  

Also, we were able to see Lissa get baptized yesterday, as well!  Elder Jacklin and I got to be the witnesses.  

Mon. July 13:  For P-Day, we went hiking in Kanawha State Forest.

It was us, the Assistants, South Hill Sisters, and the Sissonville Elders, plus Jordan, the Assistants’ investigator, who's best friends with Kelsey, and are getting baptized together next week.  We also found a stream along the trail, and a few of us went crawdad fishing!  We caught like 7 all together; I kept them in my water bottle, then released them.  

I was also the camera man, and will be submitting my footage to "Deadliest Catch." 

We were able to teach Kelsey with Brother Mahanjan.  We went over the Baptismal interview questions with her - she is super nervous for her interview, but she's going to be all right. 

Next stop was with Lissa.  We also went over the Baptismal interview questions, and she is doing great!  She's praying with more confidence now! 

We went over to Rodney's and taught him the importance of the Atonement in our lives. 

Tues. July 14:  Andrew, our investigator, skipped out on our appointment.  :(

Elder Walker came with us for the day, and we found out he's going to serve in Sissonville since they found a Physical Therapy place out there for him. 

We went to the Kirk's house and had a great lesson with them about the basics of each missionary lesson.  The questions were directed toward Isabelle (age 11), but Zach (age 15) was squirming in his seat, wanting to answer the questions for her.  He's very knowledgeable - just imagine him with the Holy Ghost - he should be there this Sunday to be confirmed.  The Kirk's have been past fellowshippers for Sharon, so the parents came with us to see her afterwards.  We committed her to read the Book of Mormon every day.  She has a lot of Faith, she just needs to act! 

Wed. July 15:  We had a brief District meeting at the Mission Office because we had interviews with President today.  During my interview, President really focused on me taking my knowledge I'm gathering and applying it to my work. 

We were able to go on exchanges with Winfield Elders; Elder Thackeray came with me to Charleston, and Elder Jacklin went with Elder Burccl-Gonzalez to Winfield.  The exchange went great.  Before Institute started, we taught Kelsey and Lissa in the ward's Family History lab, with Sister McGill and Brother Larsen, about Family History.  We also showed them what the website looks like.  Us and Sister McGill are going to keep working with them, so they can take family names to the temple July 31st! 

We planned it out so that Elder Thackeray could interview Lissa for Baptism after Institute.  We did that at the Church, and she did great! 

We were able to make a visit to Ricky; he's been super busy, but we read a chapter in the Book of Mormon with him. 

Thur. July 16:  We exchanged back, and taught just Brother Soram.

The Soram family is moving to the Assistants’ area next week!  Bittersweet! 

We were able to finally teach Warren again - we haven't taught him since May, but he's a great guy, and we went over The Restoration with him.  He's eating it up and agreed to be baptized. 

We had dinner with the Brown family, an awesome, great, young family. 

Brother Bartley was the High Priest signed up to go out with us tonight (a High Priest is assigned every Thursday to come with us).  We first went to Rodney Price and helped him set up a Family History account, but had trouble finding his parents.  He still had a good attitude about it. 

We started teaching Rodney about the “Stop Smoking” workshop.  He's been smoke-free for 2 days now! 

Fri. July 17:  A former investigator had us in from the heat for a Coke. (A tender mercy, it was like 95 degrees today!)

The McCray family cancelled last minute.  We still had Brother Hawes with us, so we tried some people by Dairy Winkle, and naturally had to stop in.  :)

COOL STORY: So Dustin, our investigator, has been busy the last couple of weeks, including going to All-Star weekend in Cincy (the WHOLE weekend!)  Did I mention he's THE biggest baseball fan I know?  Anyway, he texted us back finally when he was going through a real rough time, and decided and realized,  "I need to have those guys over."  We had a great powerful lesson on personal revelation and God answering our prayers.

Sat. July 18:  I totally saw a mouse yesterday, so I went and got a handy dandy mouse trap my mother sent me, and threw on some peanut butter, and guess what? 

This morning we got another one!  Haha.  That makes 3 on my mission! 

We read 1 Nephi 1 with Warren today. 

While looking for a former investigator, we found a really sketchy trailer (black out windows) and all these guys came out - they were really interested in what we were doing.  Two of the four guys wanted a pamphlet and a Book of Mormon.  Sweet!

We had the ward party at Kanawha State Forest.  It was a good turnout; a less active sister we didn't know about came, and we were able to talk with her and we're visiting her next week! 

To close the night, we were going to see Vernon with Brother Thomas, but he had to cancel.  So, with Brother Thomas, we went on faith to the Leonard's.  They were home (Jillian and Andre)!  We had a great lesson on the Plan of Salvation; Jillian (from Trinidad and Tobago) brought up some concerns, but it was incredible to see how The Spirit worked within her, and she was totally agreeing with The 3 Kingdoms of Glory.  They are hopefully coming to church next week. 

Sun. July 19: 

As mentioned above, Zach came to church and was Confirmed.

Brother Foote was able to baptize her.  Great Program!  Lissa's awesome! 

The Relief Society brought cookies for the Baptism and put them on the kitchen counter, covered with a sticky note that said, "DO NOT TOUCH.  FOR THE BAPTISM."  Well, someone proceeded to throw away the sticky note, and eat all the cookies!  So, the Relief Society, during the interlude hymns, were able to whip up some cheese and bologna sandwiches, peanut butter crackers, and pretzels.  Turns out, they took the bread, cheese, bologna, and crackers out of our weekly grocery bag from the Malhotra's.  But, hey, we don't care!  Whatever they had to do! 

We taught the Soram's about missionary work; Elder Jacklin's mom had sent him a Book of Mormon picture book for the Soram boys, so we read the story of Aaron and the King with them. 

Had a lesson with Kelsey on The Restoration, and sharing her testimony.  She's getting interviewed on Monday the 20th for Baptism. 

We scheduled a lot of appointments for next week! 

It was a great week in the Charleston Zone!  There were three Baptisms and one Confirmation. 

Well, it was such a fun-filled, packed week!  Missionary Work is fun!  The four people who were either Baptized or Confirmed this week in the Zone, were due to members inviting them to church or to take the missionary lessons!  So, just consider that!  Well, I can say my joy is full!  It was just so awesome to see children of our Heavenly Father come closer to Him through saving ordinances.  It could not have been done without the members here in the Charleston 1st Ward.

The Lord is hastening His work!  We just have to catch up!

Well, Hello!

We had a great week!

We had a "Faith Board" with all the days of the week on it, and we just started filling it with appointments and people we wanted to teach on that day - and we saw great success.  We are so very excited; we have Lissa's Baptism coming this Sunday and Kelsey's the next Sunday.

July 6, Mon:  P-Day
We went with the Ingles' to Hibachi where Brother Soram works.  He was our chef and it was a blast to see him in action.
We had a huge volleyball group today for P-Day.  We had the Assistants, STL's, & both sets of Charleston 2nd ward missionaries (so 11 missionaries) plus 1-2 investigators and two members.

Trevor Patton, who's about to leave for Carlsbad, CA on his mission, came with us for some appointments.  

We taught Lissa about enduring to the end.  We taught Kelsey about the Priesthood & Priesthood callings. Rodney was home, so we were able to teach about keeping the Sabbath Day holy - we need to teach more for his understanding.

July 7, Tues:
We had Mission Leadership Council today - it was pretty good and took up most of the day.
Elder Walker came with us and Brother Nate Williams drove us down to Montgomery.  We taught the Gospel of Jesus Christ to Sharon and she is having trouble thinking about the positive things of repentance.
We then picked up a former investigator named, Anida.  She had us sit on her trailer porch to teach her.  There was two chairs and five people, so do the Math!  (I think Elder Jacklin sat on a ladder, Elder Walker sat on a tire, Brother Williams sat on the edge of the porch, and I sat on a chair that wasn't even on the porch, it was on the grass).

July 8, Wed:
We taught Clyde "The Glide" about the Plan of Salvation.
Brother Hawes got a new van, so he can start taking us places again. He came with us to teach Kelsey at the church about teaching and learning the Gospel.  She goes weekly to Institute, along with Lissa and Jordan (the Assistants' investigator).
We also went to go try that awesome potential couple, but they weren't home.  But Andrew was home, so we met with him with Brother Hawes in attendance.  The Plan of Salvation brings him great comfort and helps him understand his purpose here on this life.

July 9, Thur:
We had zone meeting today and President gave us a lot of freedom to teach what we felt inspired to teach.  We coordinated with the Sister Trainer Leaders, and it went really well.  We had enough assignments to give out, so at least one member (if not both) of each companionship had an assignment.  It was a really powerful zone meeting with great testimonies and activities.
We then went on exchanges with the Parkersburg North Elders; I went with Elder Varner - he's a pretty cool Elder who's going home this transfer.  He helped me with "What I wish I knew" and I helped him stay focused.  We had a great exchange and taught two great lessons.  Meanwhile, back in Charleston, Elder Jacklin and Elder Clawson (he was my Blacksburg zone leader) taught the Soram's, Kelsey, and Lissa at McGill's house.  They were also finally able to teach Vernon and pick him up as a new investigator.  He accepted a Baptismal date for August 30th.

July 10, Fri:
Brother Hawes drove us back from Parkersburg to help us save miles.  On the way back, we had an appointment with Andrew which worked out great since Brother Hawes is his fellowshipper.  We finished up the second half of the Restoration.
We also got to teach Brother Beck about Missionary Work, and gave him a Book of Mormon to write his testimony in and hand out.  His son, Josh (age 12) who stays with him for the Summer, wants to be Baptized!  However, he's only with his dad for the Summer, then goes back to his mom's, and she wouldn't take him to church.  So, we'll keep you updated on this.
We also went to see the McCray's - we're hoping to gently bring them back to church; the ward party on the 18th (Pioneer Day celebration) is a great opportunity to fellowship them.
We also went to see the Ellison's - they are the ones who own Dairy Winkle. 

They mixed it up on us and fed us lasagna and pretzel ice cream cones! (SO GOOD!)

July 11, Sat:
We basically had a "drop lesson" with Clyde "The Glide."  He's not reading, and he might not be "all there."  He tells us the same stories every time we go over.

Today's date is 7-11!

Of course we had to partake of free Slurpees being offered at 7-11!

Brother Thomas came with us to see Vernon and Rodney; Vernon wasn't home, but we watched the Restoration with Rodney.  We're doing the "Stop Smoking" workshop with him.

July 12, Sun:
We had four investigators at church today!

We were having another Fireside tonight, so after church, we (all three sets of missionaries) went to the surrounding neighborhoods and passed out fliers to get a good turnout. We did see three families come, with a 3 hour notice, from surrounding neighborhoods.  It was a really good turnout overall.  We had three wards involved!  There were great videos and testimonies. We had Lissa, Kelsey, and Brother Soram there at the Fireside.


Well, this was quite the great week!  Wish I had more time to talk, but we have to get running!

"PLAY BALL!"

Hey Ya'll! 

Happy Fourth of July weekend!  What a blessing it is to preach the Gospel in a free country with religious freedom. 

You could say we saw some "FIREWORKS" happen this weekend.  Which included:

* Going to one of the best "Dives" EVER!  It’s called "Dairy Winkle" and is owned by a part-member family.  They have some of the best fries I have ever had!  PLUS Mac n' Cheese nuggets!  YEP!  And great shakes!  I’m definitely taking the family (and anyone who wants to) to this place someday!

* We taught a great young family and picked them up as new investigators! 

* In Sacrament Meeting we saw some very interesting things:

1.  A man walked in with a real-tree camouflage 3-piece suit!  West Virginia, indeed!
2.  The opening hymn was the “Star-Spangled Banner” to which we stood up to sing.  One particular member refused to stand up and sing due to his loyalty to the Confederate States! 
3.  At the end of Nation’s anthem, someone in the back of the chapel shouted, "PLAY BALL!"
So, not your typical Sacrament Meeting, but it grows on you out here!  So, I couldn't help but smile!

* We found this AWESOME, young, elect couple while tracting Sunday afternoon. 

* So sad to hear about President Packer's passing.  :(

As for the rest of the week: 

July 1, Wed: P-Day. 

We relaxed today, didn't do much.

We taught the Word of Wisdom to Rodney - he's been taught it before, but a good refresher was needed.  He is still trying to kick the habit of smoking, and we offered the "Quit Smoking Workshop."  And he said he might give it a shot.

Taught Kelsey about service and showed her the Mormon Message, "LIFT."  She loves Mormon Messages!  She's already watched like 60 of them! 

The newly arrived missionaries spent one more night at our house! 

July 2, Thurs: 

We have six new missionaries getting trained in the Zone! 

We were able to teach Clyde "The Glide" The Plan of Salvation out on his porch. 

Brother Larsen picked us up and he told me we're probably related somehow.  He had a cousin marry a Brenchley from Cache Valley. 

We went down to Montgomery and we were able to teach Amit.  Brother Larsen has been a part of the Amit's conversion process for about 10 years, and he was very bold and very loving, which was a big help.  Amit will be fasting and praying on Fast Sunday about if the Church is true, and he plans to be baptized when he receives that answer. 

Brother Larsen was the Bishop a year ago, so he suggested a lot of families for us to go see.  Big help!

Tonight, it was the departing missionaries turn to spend the night at our house.  They were a little "giddy" and stayed up late talking about all their greatest mission experiences! 

July 3, Fri:  

Elder Walker joined us for the day (I guess I could count him as a companion.)

We helped a member's daughter move, and were able to fellowship with some of their less-active children. 

We were able to teach Joensen Soram about the Gift of the Holy Ghost.  We promised him he would be happy, and feel the Holy Ghost more at church and he said he would come. 

We drove out to Campbell's Creek (a hollar) and went out and taught a former investigator named, Wilkinson.  On the way back, one of the Senior office missionaries recommended that we go to Dairy Winkle.  SO GOOD!

We reviewed and taught The Plan of Salvation to Brother Miller; he's planning on coming to church on Sunday, so we got him a ride and everything. 

Brother Miller also came out with us to try a potential family!  Success!  The family’s name is the Leonard's: Jillian, the mom, is the one we first talked to, and she has two sons; Andre who is 12, and Jamar who is 7.  We were able to teach them the Restoration, and they are very interested in coming to church and committed to read and pray about the Book of Mormon.  WooHOO!

July 4, Sat:  Happy 4th! 

We were a bit disappointed that no one invited us to a BBQ, picnic, party, or nothing.  It's OK, we still worked hard and fulfilled our purpose as missionaries.

We taught the Gospel of Jesus Christ to Jason by reading 2 Nephi 31.  He's way into the lessons, but doesn't keep commitments. 

We were also able to teach the McCray/Fraizer family.  They are a less-active family with four kids (ages 14, 13 , 9, 6).  It's an interesting situation; they are converts of three years.  They are not married, but in order to live the Law of Chastity, Brother McCray and Sister Fraizer do live in different houses, but spend most of their time together.  The reason they haven't tied the knot yet, is Sister Fraizer wants to graduate college with Fraizer on her diploma.  Anywho, we answered their questions about the Church's stance on same-sex marriage.  Needless to say, we didn't plan to teach that, but we tied it back to having prophets and apostles of God on the earth today. 

July 5, Sun: 

Zach, nor his family, did not show up for Sacrament meeting, so he wasn't able to be confirmed today. :( 

Lissa, came back from her Pennsylvania trip, and rode a bus all night to make it to church in the morning!  Awesome!  Dedication! 

Amit also came with a true desire to receive an answer, as he was fasting.  Elder Jacklin and I fasted along with him. 

Kelsey got to go up to D.C. for 4th of July weekend (#lucky) but she took her mom (a Methodist Minister) to church up there!  It was actually on/by the temple grounds!

Brother Miller also got a ride to church, and was very anxious to meet the Bishop and get his records moved to this ward. 

We were able to teach the Soram's after church.  Joensen didn't wake up this morning for church.  Darn it!  We watched the Restoration with them and they really enjoyed it. 

While out tracting, we met this great couple.  The conversation went like this; the woman answered the door, (talk, talk, talk) 

Us: "Have you ever heard of the Book of Mormon?"
Her: "Yeah, my husband's actually thinking about becoming a Mormon!"
I almost said, “You’re joking.”  Her husband wasn't home, so we got their info and a return appointment for Wednesday!  Their names are Luke and Jessie and they have a 1 yr. old boy. 

We had dinner at the "I's" home.  I collected Yu-gi-oh! cards as a kid/tween, and I thought I had a collection. (1 binder full)  NOPE!  Brother Ingles showed us his FOUR suitcases full of Yu-gi-oh cards!  ;)

We were able to have a lesson with Brother Miller; he dug out his scriptures and Baptismal photos!  He's just getting more and more excited about returning to church! 

Well, this was a really great week; we saw some very good things - we are meeting with Kelsey and Lissa.  We are pondering on moving Lissa's Baptism to a different day since there are going to be some conflicts after church this Sunday, but we are so excited to see two Baptisms this month! 

Does everyone back home have a Preach My Gospel book?  If you don't, I encourage you to get one (only $4-8 on LDS Store)  But, please study from that, as a family and individually, and see what you can do to help the Lord's work move forward!

I Run a Bed & Breakfast (for Elders)

Hey Ya'll!

What's been going on?
We had a great week here in Charleston!  Even though we saw a lot of things fall through (A LOT!), it ended great with Zach Kirk's Baptism on Sunday!  What a great experience to see Zach Kirk get baptized.  I guess you can say it's been my first baptism I've recorded as a key indicator on my mission (meaning an investigator I was currently working with who happened to get baptized when I was still in that area).  But, Elder Jacklin and I couldn't help but give all the credit to the Lord, and all those hard working Montgomery Elders who taught Zach everything over the years.  He just finally made the decision to be baptized, and we got to review everything with him and be there for his Baptism!

June 22, Mon:
I got a much needed haircut - I didn't want my hair to seem to "fadish." :)
We had Brother Hawes take us out to the edge of our area.  He's one of the ward missionaries and we can always count on him for help!  At the edge of our area, (see picture)

we were able to meet with a former investigator named, Missy.  She's going to be a tough one to get to church, but we'll have to get creative.

June 23, Tues:
We met with Kenny Smith (a new investigator) and we were able to teach him about the Book of Mormon, and read the Introduction with him.
We taught the Soram's today - we always have such a great time when we go there.
We taught Kelsey about Tithing and Fast Offerings with Brother Ingles.  She actually said the closing prayer!  First time!  She's been scared for a little bit.
We picked up Elder Walker from the Mission Office - he's serving as an office Elder right now since he's having treatments on his back.

He's staying with the AP's, but three times this week, he got to come with us because the AP's were busy.
We drove up to Marietta, OH! (Just as I was about to take a picture of the "Welcome to Ohio" state sign, my batteries ran out - what rotten luck, huh?  The reason for the drive was we went up to interview one of the Williamstown elders' investigators for Baptism.  I got the privilege of doing the interview - her name was Rhonda, and she was a petite little lady, probably about 4'10".  But, what a great lady!  She is very much prepared for Baptism!

June 24, Wed:
We had district meeting in the morning.
John & Madison cancelled their appointment for tonight.  John was talking to us, and was telling us they are just really stressed out right now and would like to be the ones to call us and set up appointments.  It's so tough to see these great people kind of taper off.

Brother Hawes drove us around one last time in his car before it had to go to the junk yard - thanks to not passing inspections. :(
We taught Lissa about Missionary Work, and challenged her to give someone a Book of Mormon during her week long trip to Pennsylvania.
We went and visited Brother Donald Coleman - he fed us tacos and we taught him about prayer and scripture study.
To close the night, we then reviewed the "Gospel of Jesus Christ" lesson with Rodney.

June 25, Thur:
I found out Zach got interviewed by our District Leader, Elder Thackeray last night, and passed!  The problem was, Elder Thackeray didn't bring a Baptismal record to fill out and sign.  That's a problem, so we had to get that situated.
We picked up Elder Walker again! (Fun fact: he's cousins with Paul Walker!)
We taught Brother William Miller - he just popped up on the roles, and is a less-active.
We found two great potential investigators today!  1) Clyde Tyler, a guy in his 70's who flies airplanes, and says he's worth 13 Million thanks to his successful boxing career which included a KO over Sugar Ray Leonard.  2) Chad, a 17 yr. old kid, who was smoking when were talking to him, and he first said, "You can't know anything's true!"  I turned around and said, Chad, I promise you that you can KNOW something to be true with all your heart."  After we started bearing testimony, it became less of an argument, and more of a conversation, which lead him to being interested!

June 26, Fri:
We went on exchanges with the Spencer elders.  Elder Hadfield and Elder Jacklin took Spencer, and Elder Skylar Williams came with me to Charleston!

Elder Williams and I were friends in Jr. High!  We had a great time catching up on the good ole' times!  We tried so many people, and weren't able to teach anyone. :(  Here in Charleston, "FestivALL" was going on, so we were able to walk downtown and meet a lot of people.

June 27, Sat: Click Day!  10 months a Missionary!

We finalized everything for Zach's Baptism!
We visited briefly with Andrew; he's lost his job, and going through a tough time right now.
We walked for the most part of the day.
We also taught Clyde "The Glide" Tyler "The Restoration" lesson.  He's hilarious, he's got soul!  And he cracks us up every time we go there.
We had dinner at McGill's, went down the street to visit with the Holbrook's, then came back to the McGill's to teach Kelsey the Law of Chastity.  Let's just say we kept it focused on the blessings!
We were notified by mission leadership that Elder Jacklin and I are both staying in Charleston for another transfer!

June 28, Sun:
Three investigators came to church - AND we had great Sacrament Meeting talks!  They were: Zach Kirk (I'd hope he show up to church the day of his Baptism!), Isabelle Kirk (Zach's little sister.  They are still having custody issues over her, so it might be a while before she's able to get Baptized), and Kelsey.

It's so great to see an investigator make covenants with God!  During the program, we did have a sister from the ward (who's probably not all there) keep interrupting the speakers and adding her comments.  Is that a WV thing?  The 1st Counselor was having trouble with names that day.  He kept calling Zach, "Zachary" even though his name is "Zachariah."  Elder Jacklin and I got to offer the prayers for the program.  And the 1st Counselor announced our names as, "Elder Jack-In" and "Elder Bench-Weed."  HUH?  WV?
We had a lesson with the Soram's on the Word of Wisdom.  It's been tough getting them to church.  Derek will call a taxi, but the rest of the family doesn't ever come.  Maybe because of the language barrier?
We had dinner at the Groom's.  Sister Groom is Italian and made some great pasta!  She's also VERY blunt.  Hilarious!
We then had a visit with Brother Beck, and met the rest of his family.
We also had a lesson with Rodney and committed him to read scriptures every day!

June 29, Mon:
We helped load some furniture on the van from the mission supply sheds for a senior couple.
We also helped move a potential investigator named, J.J.  He's moving down to Florida, and he and his fiance, Patricia, are very interested in meeting with missionaries.  They gave us all their contact info, including their new address, and we sent it to the mission office to send down to Florida - hopefully the missionaries down there can be there to help them unpack.
Since it's the end of the month, and we are running really low on miles, we were walking most of the day.  A real cool experience happened as we were walking; a young guy pulls up beside us in his Land Rover, and says, "Hey, can I get you phone number?"  We responded, "Yeah, sure.  Have you talked to missionaries before?"  He responded, "No, Man, I'm just going through a really tough time right now."  We proceeded to talk to him further about meeting with us, which he is totally open for. His name is Joan and he's from Columbia!  Miracles!
We might have been in a movie....as we were walking the streets of Charleston, we noticed this whole camera crew, and we started talking to a guy, who was making sure we didn't ruin the action shot.
We taught Kelsey, with Brother Thomas, a lesson on missionary work and the Book of Mormon. We gave her a Book of Mormon to share with someone, and she knew exactly who she could share that with.

June 30, Tues:
We taught Clyde "The Glide" and we read the Book of Mormon with him.
We picked up Elder Walker again to come do missionary work with us.
Brother Blessant (a recently returned RM from the Philippines) came with us for the day.  We had THREE appointments that all fell through, and we had three solid back-up plans...that all fell through.  It was a rough day.  Brother Blessant felt for us and took us out to a Mexican Restaurant.
We were able to teach Jim Heaton; he basically told us he'd never come to church.  We'll probably have a DROP lesson with him soon.
We called the zone members, and gave them their "transfer doctrine" (if they are being transferred or not).  We have six brand new missionaries (trainees) coming to the Charleston Zone.

Speaking of new missionaries, we had 25 new missionaries arrive to our mission this week (18 Elders, 7 Sisters).  Ten of those Elders stayed the night with us on Tuesday, and we will be housing them until they go out to their first areas on Thursday!  One of those elders was Elder Cheever! (from Uncle Brett & Aunt Beeb's ward, who they'd told me to look out for!)

I got a picture with Elder Cheever to show Beeb & Brett, and also because Elder Markowski, one of the AP's, had told me prior to him arriving that he's my identical twin! Haha!

Well, that was a great big, long email, but it was good times doing it!  I hope everyone is doing good!  I've spent some time studying Alma 32, and some verses that stuck out to me are verses 41-43:

41 But if ye will nourish the word, yea, nourish the tree as it beginneth to grow, by your faith with great diligence, and with patience, looking forward to the fruit thereof, it shall take root; and behold it shall be a tree springing up unto everlasting life.

42 And because of your diligence and your faith and your patience with the word in nourishing it, that it may take root in you, behold, by and by ye shall pluck the fruit thereof,which is most precious, which is sweet above all that is sweet,and which is white above all that is white, yea, and pure above all that is pure; and ye shall feast upon this fruit even until ye are filled, that ye hunger not, neither shall ye thirst.

43 Then, my brethren, ye shall reap the rewards of your faith, and your diligence, and patience, and long-suffering, waiting for the tree to bring forth fruit unto you.

Ponder that, and think just how great the reward is to feast until we are filled, and hunger and thirst no more.  That's how sweet the fruit of Eternal Life tastes.  If we continue to have faith, great diligence, and patience, I testify we can make it to the tree!
